Student Learning - Week of April 28 to May 1

Essential Question: What experiences can change the way you see yourself and the world around you? How can scientific knowledge change over time?

Tuesday
Directions: Read the following background information and watch videos about Apollo 13.
Fifty years ago, this month, the world held its breath – hoping, praying and wishing for a miracle that would spare the lives of a crew stranded in the most hostile and remote of conditions. Aboard a ruptured spacecraft, a three-man crew once bound for the moon found themselves in an epic race to survive against every conceivable obstacle imaginable. Their journey – the mission of Apollo 13 – was deemed a ‘successful failure’ given that the crew safely returned home to Earth. It was one of those moments that showed that with ingenuity, skill, creative thinking and teamwork, even the worst odds can be beat and great things can still occur despite the most epic challenges. ~Space Foundation
https://www.nasa.gov/feature/50-years-ago-apollo-13-crew-returns-safely-to-earth

The Problem:
Carbon dioxide was reaching dangerous levels in the cabin. The crew had filters, but they were for another part of the ship and were the wrong shape. Thus, NASA engineers were presented with one of the most dramatic STEM Challenges ever.

How the Movie Compares to Real Life …
https://youtu.be/eeEM_IBUv70

Wednesday - Friday - Make an Astronaut Lander
Landing on the Moon and Mars is tricky. A lander headed to the Moon can go as fast as 24,816 miles (39,937 kilometers) per hour. Those on their way to Mars might go up to 13,000 miles (21,000 kilometers) per hour. To land gently, these spacecraft need to slow down before touching the surface! And if there are astronauts on board, the lander needs to keep them safe, too.

In this challenge, use what you know and what you can investigate about gravity, motion, forces and a target of your choosing (the Moon, Mars or beyond!) to design and build a lander that will protect two "astronauts" when they touch down. Just as engineers had to develop solutions for landing different kinds of vehicles on the Moon and Mars, you will follow the engineering design process to design and build a shock-absorbing system out of simple materials; and improve your design based on the results of your test landings. ***REMEMBER...if you do not have some of the materials listed, do what the astronauts had to do and find a suitable replacement from what you have around your house.

Click on the link below to see the instructions and materials needed for this activity.
https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/pdfs/touchdown_worksheet.pdf

Discussion Questions: Please respond and share to your teacher in 365
  • What forces affected your lander as it fell?
  • After testing, what changes did you make to your lander?
  • How does testing help you improve a design?
  • What did you learn from your experience?
  • What are some other experiences that can change the way you see yourself and the world around you?
  • How can scientific knowledge change over time?

Student Learning: May 5th to  May 11th -  Writing and History

Essential Question – What is the relationship between a fair and unbiased jury-selection process and upholding U.S. constitutional rights?

Purpose - In these activities, students, you will learn about the relationship between constitutional rights and fair and unbiased jury selection. Jury duty is an important civic responsibility, and justice in America requires the work of each branch of government as well as the citizens who serve on juries.

You will explore the process for selecting members of a jury. In addition, you will learn vocabulary relevant to understanding court proceedings, which you will apply in making juror selections. Throughout the main activities and lesson extensions, you will investigate the relationship between constitutional rights and fair and unbiased jury selection.

Background information - Voir dire - (pronounced: vwahr deer) is the process of asking potential jurors questions. It is a French term that is translated in this context as “to speak the truth.” Voir dire is the process by which the attorneys and judge question prospective jurors.

The 6th Amendment - http://law.cornell.edu/constitution/sixth_amendment

The 7th Amendment -http://law.cornell.edu/constitution/seventh_amendment

Question - What attorneys or a judge want to learn during this part of the selection process.
Voir dire is designed to determine if:
  1. Any juror is biased or cannot in some way deal with the issues of the case fairly.
  2. There is some cause that would prohibit a juror to serve, such as prior knowledge of the facts of the case, or an acquaintanceship with any of the parties connected to the case, including the lawyers or the judge.
  3. Any juror has an occupation that might lead to bias.
  4. In a death penalty case, the juror is prejudiced against the death penalty.
  5. The juror had a previous similar experience, such as having been sued in a similar case.

Please complete the following 4 Fun Court Room Prep Activities:  You may download and write your answers on the documents or create a separate document in 365 to share.

Student Learning – April 28th- May 4th - Writing and History

Essential QuestionWhat experiences or events can change the way you see yourself and the world around you?

1.  ResearchThe Constitution and The Bill of Rights
Due to the colonists’ independence from Britain, they found themselves experiencing growing pains in the form of how to govern. Now the task they faced was creating their new government…One quite different than how King George III ruled. When the idea of having a government over the people came up and the Constitution was being written, people got very nervous that the government would take too much power and people would lose important rights. In our country, we have added to the Constitution amendments that change the Constitution. The first 10 of these were added right away and are called the Bill of Rights.2.  Written Responses - After Watching the Following Videos and Reading Through the Bill of Rights PowerPoint Below...Answer the following questions:
  • Because of the Bill of Rights, we enjoy many freedoms that other countries around the world do not experience.
  • What are some opportunities we are free to experience that people in other countries are not?
  • Pick any one of Bill of Rights to further research and answer the following question:
  • Which of the Bill of Rights do you believe is the most important to our society? Why?
  • Which of the Bill of Rights do you believe is most under attack today? Why?
  • What experiences or events can change the way you see yourself and the world around you?

Tuesday:
Lesson 6.2 - Student Activity Book page 189-190, problems 2-6.
Write equations to solve problems. Show all work, including a visual representation of your thinking.
Remember to use problem solving triangles to help you figure out how to write your situation and or solution equations.

Math Answer Key - Tuesday
2. 104 ÷ 8 = 13 rows
3. 12 1/2 X 14 1/2 = 181 1/4 or 181.25 square feet
4. 5 ÷ 1/4 = 20 pieces
5. 140 X 24 = 3,360 orders
6. (12 X $9.49) - (12 X $6.75) = $32.88

Wednesday:
Lesson 6.3 - Student Activity Book pages 191 and 192, problems 1-6.
Write a real world situation for each equation. Ckoose at least 2 multiplication and 2 division equations to solve. Challenge: solve all 6!!

Math Answer Key - Wednesday
These are sample problems. You may have something different because you were able to make up your own!
1. A recipe calls for 3/4 cup of flour. To make 2 times as many servings, how many cups of flour do you need?
3/4 X 2 = 6/4 cups of flour
2. On Friday, 5/6 of the students in a class bought lunch. Of those students, 1/3 bought a chef salad. How many students bought a chef salad?
5/6 X 1/3 = 5/18 of the students
3. Abbie earns $6 an hour mowing lawns. She mowed for 3.5 hours, how much money did she earn?
6 X 3.5 = $21
4. On a hot summer afternoon, 1/4 of a pitcher of lemonade was shared equally by 2 thirsty friends. How much did each friend get?
1/4 ÷ 2 = 1/8 of a pitcher
5. How many smaller sheets of paper will you get if you take three sheets of paper and cut each in half?
3 ÷ 1/2 = 6 smaller sheets of paper
6. Jackson earned $16.50 babysitting for 3 hours. At that rate, how much did he earn for each hour?
16.50 ÷ 3 = $5.50

Thursday:
Lesson 6.4 - Student Activity Book page 193-194, problems 1-8.
Write  an equation and use it to solve the problem, then use rounding to show that your answer is reasonable. Choose 6 out of the 8 problems to solve. You should choose at least one out of each of the 4 areas. Challenge: Solve all 8!!

Math Answer Key - Thursday
Equations and estimates may vary.
1. Equation and answer: 91,292 - 68,406 = 22,886 people
Estimate: Round 91,292 to 90,000 and 68,406 to 70,000, then subtract. My answer is reasonable because my estimate is 90,000 - 70,000 = 20,000, which is close to 22,886.
2. Equation and answer: (5 X 50) - 229.06 = $20.94
Estimate: Round 229.06 to 230, then subtract it from 250. My answer is reasonable because my estimate is 250 - 230 = 20, which is close to 20.94.
3. Equation and answer: 588 ÷ 21 = 28 students
Estimate: 588 is about 600 and 21 is about 20; my answer is reasonable because 600 ÷ 20 = 30, which is close to 28.
4. Equation and answer: 7.92 ÷ 8 = $0.99 or 99¢
Estimate: 7.92 is about 8; my answer is reasonable because my estimate is 8 ÷ 8 = 1, which is close to $0.99.
5. Equation and answer: 5/8 + 15/16 = 1 9/16 inches
Estimate: 5/8 is close to 1/2 and 15/16 is close to 1. My answer is reasonable because 1/2 + 1 = 1 1/2, which is close to 1 9/16.
6. Equation and answer: 2 7/8 - 7/16 = 2 7/16 inches
Estimate: 2 7/8 is close to 3 and 7/16 is close to 1/2. My answer is reasonable because 3 - 1/2 = 2 1/2, which is close to 2 7/16.
7. Equation and answer: 45 ÷ 6 = $7.50
Estimate: Each friend will receive between $7 and $8 because 6 X 7 = 42 and 6 X 8 = 48.
8. Equation and answer: 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5 kilometers
Estimate: Each runner ran between 2 and 3 kilometers because 4 X 2 = 8 and 4 X 3 = 12.

She joins the resistance. she smuggles things into the camps and sometimes even smuggles out people. I enjoyed this book because I like to learn about the Nazis and the story of the Jewish. you would like this book if you like nerve racking books and if you like stores were the girl steps up and resists. I give this book 8 stars out of 10 because this is a book that makes you feel bad for those people. By:  Lucy Larson

Salt to Sea
Author - RUTA SEPETYS

Short summary: The book Salt to Sea takes place in the winter of 1945. There are four different people and they each have a secret. Each one comes from a different homeland and they were all hunted by tragedy, lies and war. Thousands of people desperately run towards the coast vying for passage aboard the Wilhelm Gustloff one of the ships that promises safety and freedom. But not all promises can be kept in the time of war.
Why I enjoyed this book: I enjoyed the book Salt to Sea because it was cool to see how four different people crossed paths trying to gain freedom from their government.
This book is for people who like... Salt to Sea is for people who like historical fiction and mystery because each person has a different past and they express their life before war at different parts of the book and that keeps you wondering who is going to tell you about themselves next.
What I would rate this book -10 the best 1 the worst. I would rate the book 8 out of ten because I thought it was a good book, but the end was a little confusing.  By: Nora Bots

Shadow and Bone
By Leigh Bardugo
This girl named Alina Starkov is a soldier who knows she may not survive her first trek across the Shadow Fold which is a creepy land full of volcra and more. The place is crawling with monsters with unnatural darkness. but when she is attacked, Helena unleashes dormant magic not even she knew she possessed. I enjoy this book because it has a lot of plot. And it's just for 5.2 readers It is a three-book series and it is a three-book series and it's meant for middle schoolers. Some language, and very creepy monsters. I would give it a 10 out of 10 because it is a really good book and it has a lot of adventure in mystery which I love
